How I Test and Research eSIMs

At eSIM Travel Guide, I combine first-hand eSIM testing with thorough
provider and carrier research. Testing shows how a service behaves
during an actual trip. Research helps establish the current plan
details, restrictions, and alternatives that a speed test alone cannot
explain.

My guides serve travelers worldwide, with a strong focus on the
United States. Recommendations draw on the evidence available for the
specific destination and plan. I distinguish between what I personally
tested, what I directly observed, and what I verified through research.
A researched option can be worth recommending without being presented as
personally tested.

What Supports My
Recommendations

I use three types of evidence:

  • First-hand testing and observations: Measurements
    and experiences from using an eSIM, tied to the locations, devices,
    networks, and testing dates recorded for that trip.
  • Provider and carrier research: Published plan
    details, technical documentation, coverage information, support
    guidance, and terms that help explain what a service offers and where
    restrictions apply.
  • Editorial assessment: My judgment about which
    option best fits a traveler’s route, data needs, trip length, and setup
    requirements, based on the testing and research available.

In each review or comparison, I identify the scope of personal
testing and distinguish research-only options. Testing a provider in one
country does not mean I have tested it in another, and testing one plan
does not establish performance across its entire range.

Real-World Travel Testing

I test eSIMs while actually traveling and using my phone normally.
This can include stationary testing, walking, commuting, driving, and
longer-distance travel by train.

The purpose is to see how an eSIM behaves outside a single ideal test
location. Real-world use can reveal differences in network access,
connection stability, and performance that may not appear from one
stationary speed test.

The exact testing varies by trip. I record the locations, devices,
networks, and measurements that support the performance claims I
publish.

Performance Testing

I use tools including Ookla Speedtest and Opensignal
to measure:

  • Download speed
  • Upload speed
  • Latency

Where appropriate, I repeat tests in different locations rather than
combining unrelated results into one artificial country-wide
average.

Published speed results are treated as measurements from the specific
place and time tested. They are not guarantees of what another traveler
will receive.

Mobile Network and Signal
Checks

I use field-test diagnostics and CellMapper to help
identify the mobile network connected during testing and review
available radio-signal information.

This helps me understand which local network an eSIM is actually
using during the test, rather than relying entirely on a provider’s
marketing page.

Network information recorded during testing is treated as first-hand
evidence from that trip. I do not assume that the same network will
always be available on every future plan, because roaming agreements and
network access can change.

Testing While Moving

Moving-use testing helps show whether connectivity remains usable as
the phone travels through different coverage areas, within a city or
between destinations.

Unless I have a complete logged dataset, I describe these as
real-world mobility observations, not continuous
drive-test averages or controlled network-handover benchmarks.

Devices

Testing can be conducted across more than one real consumer
device.

For my Greece testing, for example, I used:

  • iPhone 17 — business phone
  • Samsung Galaxy S25 — personal phone

Using both iPhone and Samsung hardware provides useful real-world
device context, but it does not automatically make the testing a
controlled device comparison.

Unless the records specifically identify which provider was tested on
which phone under comparable conditions, I do not attribute performance
differences to the device or claim that one phone performed better.

Greece Testing Example

During a two-week business trip in Greece, I tested five
international travel eSIM services — Sim Local, Ubigi, Nomad, Airalo,
and Orange Travel — alongside a local Vodafone Greece eSIM.

Performance measurements were recorded separately in Athens
and Thessaloniki
. I also used the services while commuting and
driving within both cities rather than relying only on a single
stationary testing point.

All six services were also tested during the train journeys between
Athens and Thessaloniki, covering roughly 11
hours of travel
across the outbound and return trips.

That train use provides real-world transit evidence, but I did not
collect a complete route-wide speed series for every provider. I
therefore do not present the journey as a controlled railway-coverage
benchmark.

Provider and Carrier
Research

Hands-on testing is one part of the evaluation. I also research the
details that determine whether a plan is suitable before someone buys
it.

I prioritize official provider plan pages, carrier information, help
centers, technical documentation, and terms. Depending on the guide,
this includes:

  • Plan prices, checkout currency, data allowances, and validity
    periods
  • Destination coverage and stated local network access
  • Full-speed allowances, fair-use policies, and reduced-speed
    limits
  • Hotspot and tethering support
  • Calls, SMS, and phone-number availability
  • Device compatibility and carrier-unlock requirements
  • Installation, activation timing, and roaming settings
  • Top-ups, refunds, identity verification, and support options
  • Local prepaid alternatives and home-carrier roaming options

I check details for the specific plan and destination rather than
assuming a provider’s general marketing claims apply to every product.
If official sources are unclear or conflict, I flag the uncertainty
instead of presenting an assumption as a confirmed feature.

Coverage maps and advertised network access help explain a plan’s
potential reach. They are not substitutes for measured speeds or proof
that I personally used the service in every covered location.

Keeping Testing and
Research Current

A recorded test describes what happened at that time. A later pricing
or plan-information check does not make it a new performance test.

When updating a guide, I distinguish refreshed research from new
hands-on testing. Testing dates and pricing or fact-check dates provide
that context where relevant. If a provider changes its network access or
plan terms, I do not assume older results describe the revised
product.

Prices, promotions, network arrangements, and restrictions can change
after publication. Readers should confirm the final checkout price and
current plan terms before purchasing.

Evidence Boundaries

I separate what I directly measured from what I observed and from
what provider research says.

First-hand testing may support statements about:

  • Measured download and upload speed
  • Measured latency
  • Networks observed during testing
  • Device and location context
  • Connection behavior I directly experienced
  • Mobility observations from a documented trip

It does not automatically support claims about:

  • Nationwide performance
  • Island-wide coverage
  • The fastest network in an entire country
  • Guaranteed speeds
  • Performance in locations I did not test
  • Device superiority
  • Continuous route performance when a full data series was not
    recorded

Research can support statements about documented plan features and
stated coverage. It does not turn an untested plan into a tested one or
establish how it will perform on a particular trip.

How I Combine Testing and
Research

Speed is only one part of an eSIM recommendation.

When deciding which service I would recommend, I also consider
factors such as:

  • Plan price and data allowance
  • Validity period
  • Local network access
  • Hotspot support
  • Fair-use restrictions
  • Calls and SMS
  • Phone-number options
  • Ease of purchase and activation
  • Regional coverage
  • The needs of the traveler the plan is built for

The fastest measured service is not automatically the best choice for
every traveler. A short city break, a rural road trip, and a longer stay
can call for different plans. I explain the tradeoffs and distinguish
firsthand findings from research-based assessments so readers can see
why an option is recommended.

The goal is not simply to identify the highest speed-test number. It
is to use practical testing, thorough research, and clear evidence
boundaries to help someone choose an eSIM that fits the way they will
actually travel.
